Bibliography
Woody Allen was born December 1, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, under the name Allan Stewart Konigsberg. He is an American screenwriter, director, actor, comedian, author, playwright, and musician. In the 1950s, he began his career as a comedy writer. He would make short scripts for the television and even began to publish humor books. Following in the 1960s, he began to perform stand-up comedy, creating his own pieces and even emphasizing monologues of others instead of traditional jokes. His comedian self was completely different than his real person outside of this career. By the mid-1960s, he was even writing and directing films. His slapstick comedian style was transformed into more of a dramatic comedian which was influenced by European art cinema during the 1970s. Typically, Allen stars in his films, normally as the main person of his comedy. While all of his films are considered great by most critics, a few stand out as being exceptional, including Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Midnight in Paris. Apart from his comedy writing, he is a jazz clarinetist, performing on a regular basis at small venues in Manhattan. His career reached an all time high in 2004 when he was ranked fourth out of a thousand by Comedy Central as the fourth greatest stand-up comedian. However, he was ranked third by a UK survey. In fact, he is regarded as one of the best filmmakers of this century, for two reasons: his views on art, in addition to his fabulous film making skills. Four films I will following include Annie Hall, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Manhattan, and New York Stories.
