Annie Hall is Woody Allen’s romantic comedy following the roller coaster relationship of the New York couple, Annie and Alvy. Woody Allen, co-starred as Alvy Singer, strives to find love, after his two failed relationships. The film is co-written by his friend Marshall Brickman, whom the character Alvy is greatly based on. His first marriage, with Allison Portchnik, whom he met at his comedy show, was not pleasing to him in a sexual sense. His second marriage was to a New York intellectual. However, their sexual relationship was still not pleasing to him. Alvy and Annie meet on a tennis court, where Annie then gives him a ride back to her place, to enjoy wine and chat. Following this, they go on their first date, to a club where Annie sings. Shortly thereafter, they kiss, so they can, as Alvy say, “Get it out of the way!” The couple eventually moves in together and things begin to get tense. Eventually, this culminates to their break up. After a date one night with a horrid girl, he receives an emergency call from Annie. He rushes over to her place, only to learn she needs a spider in her bathroom killed. Preceding the death of the spider, Annie breaks down, insisting he stay, remarking on how much she has missed him. They vow to stay together. However, after a flight out to California, where Avy presents an award on television, they agree things are not working again and split up. She falls for Tony Lacey, a record producer. He attempts to win her back but fails and therefore, writes a play with a different ending. In this version, she accepts his plead for her back at the end.

The setting of Annie Hall is crucial. Annie Hall is set in a very busy New York, with the outdoor scenes filled with old fashion cars, honking, congested with people, and taxis. One car that stood out in particular, was Annie Hall’s old, pale, yellow Station Wagon*. In fact, there were a descent amount of these throughout the movie, including random ones on the street and even Alvy’s at the end. In addition, there was a stereotype of Annie's ability to drive that car, through her recklessness and obliviousness to her poor driving, as stereotyped of most women in general. Another interesting aspect was all the women who were smoking, which I found interesting but what was not completely unexpected. The houses were similar to those in the Fan of downtown Richmond. They were beautiful homes with black iron gates.* Almost every character was sporting a pair of big glasses.* Even the tennis players had very different tennis outfits from what you see today, including Polo shirts with short shorts, usually all white, for both men and women. Another interesting aspect, were the policeman on horseback.* There were even some interesting historical references I picked up on, such as the Stones playing at Madison Square Garden.
The outdoor scenes were beautiful, busy, and bright, contrary to the majority of the indoor scenes. I think the mood directly resulted in the color contrasts. Indoors, a cheerful relationship, such as the scene with Annie and Alvy messing with the lobsters, was bright and vibrant, with the sun shining in. More intimate scenes, such as those in the bedroom, were darker, with red bulbs and little light other than the light of the moon, lighting the scene. During these intimate scenes, you could even hear the blocks ticking. Every room in the houses had tons of books, usually a radio, and one room may even have a television.* As a whole, their lives seem a whole lot more simpler than ours now. Imagine our lives without technology! Even the tennis rackets, with circular heads and long handles,* are so different from the ones we see and use today. Lastly, there was some racial prejudice; one example is Alvy's parents blaming their black house cleaner for stealing for them.
